Which ED tablet is right for me?

Sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil all work in the same way and help most men. The biggest difference is timing. Sildenafil and vardenafil work for up to about 4 hours, so you take them shortly before sex. Tadalafil lasts up to 36 hours, and a low dose can be taken every day if you have sex often or prefer not to plan. Branded and generic versions contain the same medicine.

How ED tablets work

ED tablets (called PDE5 inhibitors) increase blood flow to the penis. They only work when you are sexually aroused: they do not cause an erection on their own or increase sex drive. Take one tablet about an hour before sex, and no more than one dose in 24 hours. Sildenafil and vardenafil may take longer to work after a heavy or fatty meal.

Who shouldn’t take ED tablets?

Do not take ED tablets if you:

  • use nitrate medicines for chest pain, such as GTN spray or isosorbide tablets
  • use “poppers” (amyl nitrite)
  • take riociguat for pulmonary hypertension
  • have been told to avoid sex or strenuous activity because of a heart problem, or have had a recent heart attack or stroke
  • have very low blood pressure

Our consultation asks about these, and about other medicines that can interact, so the prescriber can check your treatment is safe.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction, also called impotence, means you can’t get an erection, or can’t keep one long enough to have sex. It is very common, especially as men get older. Having problems now and then is normal, often because of stress, tiredness or alcohol. If it keeps happening, it’s worth getting checked.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

  • Physical causes: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, being overweight and low testosterone.
  • Psychological causes: stress, anxiety, depression and relationship problems.
  • Lifestyle: smoking, drinking too much alcohol, recreational drugs and tiredness.
  • Medicines: some blood pressure tablets (particularly water tablets and beta-blockers), some antidepressants and hormone treatments for prostate cancer.

Don’t stop taking a prescribed medicine because of erection problems. Speak to your GP or pharmacist first.

Erectile dysfunction and your health

Erection problems that keep happening can be a sign of a health condition that can be treated, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes. That is why it’s worth seeing your GP for a check-up, even if ED tablets work well for you. Many pharmacies, including ours, can check your blood pressure.

Can erectile dysfunction be cured?

It depends on the cause. ED caused by stress, alcohol or a medicine often improves once the cause is dealt with, and losing weight, stopping smoking and being more active can help. ED tablets don’t cure the problem, but they work well for most men while they take them.

Things you can try yourself

  • lose weight if you need to, eat healthily and exercise regularly
  • stop smoking
  • drink no more than 14 units of alcohol a week
  • find ways to reduce stress
  • avoid cycling for more than 3 hours a week

Buying ED tablets online safely

Medicines sold by unregulated websites can be fake or contain the wrong ingredients. Only buy from a pharmacy registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Bury Healthcare Online is a GPhC-registered pharmacy (1126145), and every prescription order is reviewed by a UK prescriber.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a prescription for erectile dysfunction tablets?
Most ED tablets are prescription-only, so you need a consultation first. Ours takes about 5 minutes and a UK prescriber reviews it. Viagra Connect and Eropid (sildenafil 50mg) are pharmacy medicines, which a pharmacist can supply without a prescription after checking they are suitable for you.
What is the most effective treatment for erectile dysfunction?
Sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil work well for most men. The main difference between them is how long they last. If one doesn’t suit you, another often will, and our prescriber can help you choose.
What is the difference between sildenafil and tadalafil?
Sildenafil (the medicine in Viagra) works for up to about 4 hours, so you take it shortly before sex. Tadalafil (the medicine in Cialis) can last up to 36 hours, which gives more freedom over timing. Low-dose tadalafil can also be taken every day.
Can blood pressure tablets cause erectile dysfunction?
Some can. Water tablets (thiazide diuretics) and beta-blockers are the blood pressure medicines most often linked with erection problems. Some antidepressants can also affect erections. Don’t stop any medicine on your own: speak to your GP or pharmacist, who may be able to suggest an alternative.
Is erectile dysfunction permanent?
Often not. Erection problems caused by stress, tiredness, alcohol or a medicine often get better when the cause is dealt with. When ED is linked to a long-term condition, treatment can usually still help you get and keep an erection.
Can stress or anxiety cause erectile dysfunction?
Yes. Stress, anxiety, depression and relationship problems are common causes, especially in younger men. Worrying about it can make it worse. ED tablets can help, and talking therapy or counselling can help with the underlying cause.
Can I drink alcohol with ED tablets?
A small amount of alcohol is unlikely to cause problems, but drinking a lot makes erection problems worse and can make you more likely to feel dizzy or faint with these medicines. It is best to keep to small amounts.
How will my treatment be delivered?
Approved orders are dispatched from our GPhC-registered pharmacy in Bury in plain, discreet packaging. You can choose standard delivery (£3.99) or Special Delivery (£9.99) at checkout.
