Who promethazine is for

Adults aged 18 and over who need relief from allergy symptoms, itchy skin, travel sickness or occasional sleeplessness, who are not allergic to phenothiazines, are not taking an MAOI antidepressant, and are not pregnant or breastfeeding.

Do not take promethazine if you are allergic to promethazine or other phenothiazines; if you take, or have taken in the last 14 days, an MAOI antidepressant (phenelzine, isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine, moclobemide); or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding (without medical advice).

Check with the pharmacist first if you have epilepsy, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate or difficulty passing urine, liver, kidney, heart or long-term breathing problems, or a bowel blockage; if you are elderly; or if you take sedatives, strong painkillers, tricyclic antidepressants or other medicines that cause drowsiness.

Promethazine causes drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you, and do not drink alcohol with it. Always read the patient information leaflet before use.
