Thrush & Women's Health Treatments
Vaginal thrush (vulvovaginal candidiasis) is a very common condition caused by an overgrowth of the yeast Candida albicans. It affects around 75% of women at some point in their lives and is characterised by itching, soreness, and a thick white discharge. It is not a sexually transmitted infection.
Thrush can often be effectively treated with antifungal products available from our pharmacy β including creams, pessaries, and oral capsules. All information submitted through our consultation is treated in strict confidence.
Vaginal thrush (first episode or recurrent where previously diagnosed), external vulval irritation caused by thrush, associated with antibiotic use or other known triggers.
- Intense itching or irritation
- Thick white discharge
- Redness and soreness
- Burning sensation
- Stinging when urinating
- Discomfort during sex
If this is a first episode and you have not had thrush diagnosed before β see your GP to confirm the diagnosis.
If you have unusual coloured (green, yellow, grey) or strong-smelling discharge β this may indicate a different infection.
If you have pelvic or abdominal pain β this requires urgent GP assessment.
If you have had more than 2 episodes in the past 6 months β recurrent thrush needs GP review.
Thrush Treatments
We stock a range of thrush treatments including Canesten external cream, Canesten Thrush Combi (internal + external), clotrimazole pessaries, and fluconazole 150mg capsules (oral treatment). All are suitable for adult women and are widely recommended in NHS guidance as first-line thrush treatments.
External cream treats the vulval area. Pessaries treat the vaginal infection directly. Oral fluconazole treats the infection systemically. Our pharmacist can advise on the most appropriate option for your symptoms during your consultation.
Why Do I Need a Pharmacist Consultation?
Thrush treatments are Pharmacy (P) medicines because they must be used appropriately β for confirmed or strongly suspected thrush only. Our consultation screens for symptoms that may indicate a different condition (such as bacterial vaginosis or an STI) that would require different treatment, and checks for contraindications including pregnancy and current medications.
All information is treated in the strictest confidence and reviewed only by our GPhC-registered pharmacist. Bury Healthcare Online, GPhC No. 1126145.
