Anbesol Adult Strength Gel gives fast, targeted relief from the pain of mouth ulcers and denture irritation. Its active ingredient, the local anaesthetic lidocaine hydrochloride 2%, numbs the sore area on contact, while two antibacterial ingredients help keep it clean. The gel is sugar-free and suitable for adults and children over 12.
What is Anbesol Adult Gel?
Anbesol Adult Strength Gel is a clear oromucosal gel for the inside of the mouth. It combines lidocaine hydrochloride 2% w/w (a local anaesthetic) with cetylpyridinium chloride and chlorocresol (antibacterials). It is sold from our pharmacy; our team can advise whether it is right for you.
What is Anbesol Adult Gel used for?
- Temporary relief of pain from recurrent mouth ulcers
- Soreness caused by denture irritation
It is for the relief of pain only and does not cure the underlying cause. It is not for infant teething – this is an adult-strength gel.
How does Anbesol Gel work?
Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic that temporarily blocks pain signals from the sore area, numbing the ulcer or rubbed gum so it is more comfortable. The cetylpyridinium chloride and chlorocresol help reduce bacteria around the painful spot.
How to use Anbesol Adult Gel
- Put a small amount of gel on a clean fingertip.
- Apply it directly to the sore area.
- Use up to four times a day.
- Do not use for more than 7 days unless your dentist or doctor advises it.
Please confirm the directions against the patient information leaflet inside your pack before use.
How long does Anbesol take to work?
The numbing effect of lidocaine usually begins within a minute or two of applying the gel and lasts for a short time, so it can be reapplied (up to four times a day) when the pain returns.
Side effects of Anbesol Adult Gel
Anbesol is usually well tolerated. Occasionally there may be brief stinging on application or temporary numbness that spreads slightly beyond the sore area. Rarely, some people are sensitive to the ingredients. Stop use and seek advice if you develop swelling, a rash or difficulty swallowing.
Who should not use Anbesol Adult Gel?
Do not use it if you are allergic to lidocaine, local anaesthetics or any of the ingredients. It is not suitable for children under 12. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or you have a lot of ulcers, an ulcer that has lasted more than three weeks, or ulcers that keep coming back, speak to your pharmacist, doctor or dentist.
Anbesol Gel vs Anbesol Liquid
The gel is easy to apply precisely to a single ulcer or sore spot with a fingertip. The Anbesol Liquid is applied with the supplied applicator and can be handy for areas that are harder to reach. Both relieve mouth-ulcer and denture pain – choose whichever is easier for you to use.
