£4.99£9.99

Canesten Cream contains clotrimazole 1%, the UK’s most trusted antifungal cream. One tube treats most common fungal skin infections — from the external symptoms of thrush to athlete’s foot, ringworm, jock itch and sweat rash. Available without prescription.

What is Canesten cream used for?

  • External symptoms of vaginal thrush and candidal balanitis
  • Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis)
  • Ringworm (tinea corporis) and jock itch (tinea cruris)
  • Fungal sweat rash and infected skin folds (intertrigo)

How does it work?

Clotrimazole is an azole antifungal. It destroys the cell membrane of the fungi and yeasts (including Candida and dermatophytes) that cause these infections, clearing the rash and stopping the itch at its source. It also has some antibacterial activity against skin bacteria that can complicate fungal rashes.

How to use Canesten cream

  • Wash and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer 2 to 3 times a day and rub in gently.
  • Keep using the cream for the full course — usually 2 to 4 weeks depending on the infection — even if it looks better sooner, to stop it coming back.
  • Wash your hands after applying.
  • If there is no improvement within 7 days (for thrush symptoms) or after the full course (skin infections), see your pharmacist or doctor.

Canesten 1% vs Canesten 2% thrush cream

The 2% external cream is double-strength and made specifically for the external symptoms of vaginal thrush. The 1% cream is the all-rounder for fungal skin infections anywhere on the body, and also works for external thrush symptoms and balanitis.

Side effects and cautions

Occasionally mild burning, stinging or redness where applied. Do not use if allergic to clotrimazole or cetostearyl alcohol. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist first. The cream can damage latex condoms and diaphragms — use alternative precautions if applying to the genital area.

Canesten cream FAQs

What does Canesten cream treat?
Most common fungal skin infections: external thrush symptoms, athlete’s foot, ringworm, jock itch, sweat rash and infected skin folds. It kills both yeasts (Candida) and the dermatophyte fungi behind athlete’s foot and ringworm.
How long does Canesten cream take to work?
Itching usually eases within a few days, but keep applying the cream for the full course — typically 2 to 4 weeks depending on the infection — so the rash does not come back.
Can men use Canesten cream?
Yes. It treats candidal balanitis (thrush of the penis) as well as jock itch and athlete’s foot. Apply thinly 2 to 3 times a day.
Is Canesten cream the same as clotrimazole cream?
Yes — Canesten is the original brand of clotrimazole 1% cream. Generic clotrimazole 1% creams contain the same active ingredient at the same strength.
Does Canesten cream affect condoms?
If you apply it to the genital area, yes — clotrimazole can damage latex condoms and diaphragms. Use alternative precautions during treatment and for up to 5 days after.
Can I use Canesten cream on my face or on children?
It can be used on most skin areas, but avoid the eyes and mouth. For young children, or if you are unsure what the rash is, check with your pharmacist or GP before treating.
