Canesten HC Cream combines two actives — clotrimazole 1% to kill the fungal infection and hydrocortisone 1% to calm the itching, redness and inflammation fast. It is the treatment to reach for when a fungal skin infection is angry and inflamed. Pharmacy (P) medicine; use for a maximum of 7 days.
What is Canesten HC used for?
- Inflamed athlete’s foot (tinea pedis)
- Fungal sweat rash (candidal intertrigo) — in skin folds, under the breasts, in the groin
- Inflamed candidal skin infections, including candidal vulvitis and balanitis
The clotrimazole clears the fungus while the hydrocortisone quickly settles the inflammation, so itching and redness ease within days rather than weeks.
How to use Canesten HC Cream
- Apply a thin layer to the affected area twice a day and rub in gently.
- Do not use for longer than 7 days — the cream contains a steroid.
- If the infection has not cleared after 7 days, continue with a plain antifungal cream (e.g. Canesten 1%) or see your pharmacist or doctor.
- Not for children under 10 unless a doctor advises it.
- Avoid the eyes and broken skin; wash hands after use.
Side effects and cautions
Canesten HC is generally well tolerated; occasionally mild local irritation, burning or itching occurs. Because of the hydrocortisone, avoid using it on large areas, on the face, or under dressings, and do not use it repeatedly without medical advice. Speak to a doctor before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
