Corsodyl Gum Disease Treatment Mouthwash contains chlorhexidine digluconate 0.2% w/v, an antibacterial rinse that treats and helps prevent gum disease (gingivitis) by controlling the plaque bacteria that cause it.

What is Corsodyl mouthwash?

Corsodyl 0.2% is a medicated, mint-flavoured mouthwash containing the antiseptic chlorhexidine digluconate. It works directly in the mouth to reduce the bacteria in dental plaque, which is the main cause of red, swollen and bleeding gums. It is a general sale (GSL) medicine supplied by a GPhC-registered UK pharmacy.

What is Corsodyl used for?

Corsodyl 0.2% mouthwash is used to:

  • Treat and help prevent gum disease (gingivitis)
  • Control the build-up of dental plaque
  • Maintain oral hygiene when toothbrushing is difficult, including after dental treatment
  • Help manage mouth ulcers and keep them clean

How does Corsodyl work?

Chlorhexidine binds to the surfaces in your mouth and to bacteria, reducing the plaque that irritates and inflames the gums. Lowering the bacterial load lets inflamed gums settle and recover.

How to use Corsodyl mouthwash

  • Use Corsodyl undiluted. Fill the cap to the 10 ml line.
  • Rinse thoroughly around your mouth for about 1 minute, then spit out. Do not swallow.
  • Use twice a day, morning and evening. For gum disease, a course of about one month is usual.
  • Brush first, rinse with water, then leave about 30 minutes before using Corsodyl – toothpaste can stop it working.

Please confirm the directions against the patient information leaflet inside your pack before use.

How long does Corsodyl take to work?

Gum inflammation usually improves over the one-month course as plaque is brought under control. Use it consistently twice a day for the best result, and see your dentist if your gums do not improve.

Side effects of Corsodyl

Corsodyl can cause temporary brown staining of the teeth and tongue and a change in taste; both settle after you stop using it, and staining can be removed by a dentist or hygienist. Brushing before use reduces staining. Some people get mild mouth irritation. Rarely, chlorhexidine can cause an allergic reaction – stop using it and seek medical help if you have swelling, a rash or difficulty breathing.

Who should not use Corsodyl

Do not use Corsodyl if you are allergic to chlorhexidine or any of the ingredients. Keep it away from the eyes and ears. It is not generally recommended for children under 12 unless a dentist advises it.

Corsodyl Treatment vs Corsodyl Daily

This 0.2% mouthwash is the treatment-strength product for actively tackling gum disease over a short course. Corsodyl Daily is a lower-strength mouthwash for everyday gum care. Use the 0.2% treatment for a flare-up, then maintain healthy gums with a daily product.

Corsodyl FAQs

What is Corsodyl mouthwash used for?
Corsodyl 0.2% mouthwash is an antibacterial (chlorhexidine) rinse used to treat and prevent gum disease (gingivitis) and to control the dental plaque that causes it. It also helps maintain oral hygiene when toothbrushing is difficult, for example after dental treatment, and can be used to help manage mouth ulcers.
How do you use Corsodyl mouthwash?
Rinse with 10 ml (one capful) of undiluted Corsodyl around your mouth for about 1 minute, twice a day, then spit it out. Do not swallow it. For gum disease, a course of about one month is usual. Leave a gap of around half an hour between brushing with toothpaste and using Corsodyl, as toothpaste can reduce its effect.
How long can you use Corsodyl?
Corsodyl 0.2% is intended for short courses – typically about one month for treating gingivitis. It is not designed for indefinite daily use; for everyday gum care a lower-strength daily mouthwash is more suitable. If gum problems persist, see your dentist.
Does Corsodyl stain your teeth?
Yes, Corsodyl can cause temporary brown staining of the teeth, tongue and some fillings, especially with tea, coffee or red wine. Brushing your teeth before using it helps reduce staining, and a dentist or hygienist can remove any build-up. The staining is not permanent.
What are the side effects of Corsodyl mouthwash?
The most common effects are temporary staining of the teeth and tongue and a change in taste, which returns to normal after stopping. Some people get mild irritation or a burning feeling in the mouth. Rarely, chlorhexidine can cause an allergic reaction – stop using it and seek medical help if you get swelling, a rash or difficulty breathing.
Can you use Corsodyl every day or long term?
Corsodyl 0.2% is a treatment-strength mouthwash meant for short courses, not continuous long-term daily use. For daily prevention, a lower-strength everyday gum mouthwash is intended for that purpose. Follow the label and ask your dentist if you need to use it for longer than recommended.
What is the difference between Corsodyl Treatment and Corsodyl Daily?
Corsodyl Treatment (this 0.2% mouthwash) is a stronger, short-course rinse for actively treating gum disease. Corsodyl Daily is a lower-strength mouthwash designed for everyday use to help keep gums healthy. Use the 0.2% treatment for a flare-up, then maintain with a daily product.
Can you use Corsodyl with toothpaste?
Not at the same time. Ingredients in toothpaste can stop chlorhexidine working, so brush first, rinse your mouth with water, and leave about 30 minutes before using Corsodyl (or use it at a separate time of day).
Can Corsodyl be used for mouth ulcers?
Yes. Corsodyl can help keep mouth ulcers clean and support healing by reducing bacteria. Rinse as directed. If a mouth ulcer lasts longer than 3 weeks, have it checked by your dentist or doctor.
Can children use Corsodyl mouthwash?
Corsodyl 0.2% mouthwash is not generally recommended for children under 12 unless a dentist advises it. Ask your dentist or pharmacist before using it for a child.
