Daktacort Cream is a medicated, dual-action cream that treats fungal skin infections where there is also inflammation. It combines two active ingredients - miconazole nitrate 2%, an antifungal, and hydrocortisone 1%, a mild steroid - so it clears the infection while easing the redness, swelling and itching at the same time.
What is Daktacort cream?
Daktacort is a pharmacy (P) medicine that contains miconazole nitrate 2% and hydrocortisone 1%. Miconazole is an antifungal that kills the fungus (and some of the bacteria) causing the infection, while hydrocortisone is a mild topical steroid that reduces inflammation. Together they treat the infection and relieve the symptoms in one cream.
What is Daktacort cream used for?
Daktacort is used to treat fungal skin infections that are also red, sore or itchy, including:
- Athlete’s foot with inflammation
- Sweat rash (intertrigo) in skin folds
- Other fungal skin infections, such as ringworm and thrush of the skin, where there is inflammation
Daktacort is for skin only. It is not used to treat vaginal or oral thrush - those need a different product, so ask your pharmacist.
How does Daktacort cream work?
The miconazole in Daktacort stops the fungus growing and destroys it, tackling the cause of the infection. The hydrocortisone calms the body’s inflammatory response, which quickly relieves the itching, redness and soreness while the antifungal does its work.
How to use Daktacort cream
- Wash and dry the affected area of skin.
- Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area and the skin around it.
- Use it twice a day (morning and night), and wash your hands afterwards.
- Do not use it for more than 7 days without speaking to your pharmacist or doctor.
For athlete’s foot, your pharmacist may suggest continuing with an antifungal cream alone for a while after the inflammation has settled, to fully clear the infection.
Side effects of Daktacort cream
Daktacort is usually well tolerated. Occasionally it can cause mild burning, stinging, redness or irritation where it is applied. Rarely, it may cause an allergic skin reaction. Stop using it and seek advice if your skin reaction gets worse or does not improve. A full list of side effects is in the patient information leaflet.
Who should not use Daktacort cream
Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using Daktacort if you:
- Are under 10 years old (the over-the-counter cream is for adults and children aged 10 and over)
- Want to use it on your face, eyes, or around the bottom or genitals - avoid these areas unless a doctor advises it
- Have broken, weeping or ulcerated skin
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
How to store Daktacort cream
Daktacort cream does not need to be kept in the fridge. Store it at room temperature, below 25°C, and do not freeze it. Pharmacies sometimes keep stock refrigerated to protect its shelf life, which is why you may have seen it chilled - but at home, a cool, dry place is fine. Always check the expiry date and keep it out of the sight and reach of children.
