Difflam Spray is a fast-acting treatment for a painful, inflamed mouth or throat. It contains benzydamine hydrochloride 0.15% w/v, a locally acting anti-inflammatory and pain reliever that you spray directly onto the sore area for targeted relief.

What is Difflam Spray?

Difflam Spray is a metered oromucosal spray containing benzydamine hydrochloride 0.15%. Each spray delivers 262.5 micrograms of benzydamine onto the lining of the mouth or throat. Benzydamine is a locally acting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory that eases pain and swelling where it is sprayed, rather than working through the whole body like a tablet. Difflam Spray is a pharmacy (P) medicine, supplied from a GPhC-registered UK pharmacy.

What is Difflam Spray used for?

Difflam Spray relieves pain and inflammation in the mouth and throat. It is used for:

  • Sore throat and a painful, inflamed throat
  • Mouth ulcers and sore, inflamed gums or mouth
  • Soreness after dental treatment or a tonsillectomy
  • Mouth and throat soreness caused by radiotherapy

It treats the pain and inflammation only – it is not an antibiotic and does not cure an underlying infection.

How does Difflam Spray work?

Benzydamine acts on the local processes that cause pain and swelling. Applied directly to the inflamed tissue, it reduces inflammation and has a mild local anaesthetic effect, numbing and soothing the sore area within minutes.

How to use Difflam Spray

  • Aim the nozzle at the sore part of your mouth or throat and press to spray.
  • Adults, the elderly and children over 12: 4 to 8 sprays every 1½ to 3 hours.
  • Children under 12: ask your pharmacist – the dose depends on age and weight.
  • Do not use continuously for more than 7 days unless a doctor or dentist tells you to.

How long does Difflam Spray take to work?

Because it works on contact, most people feel soothing relief within a few minutes of spraying. The effect is local and short-lived, so you can reapply every 1½ to 3 hours as needed.

Side effects of Difflam Spray

Difflam Spray is usually well tolerated. You may notice a brief stinging or numbness in the mouth or throat, or a dry mouth. Rarely, some people are sensitive to benzydamine and may develop a rash, itching or swelling. Stop using it and seek medical advice if you have signs of an allergic reaction.

Who should not use Difflam Spray

Do not use Difflam Spray if you are allergic to benzydamine or any of the ingredients. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your pharmacist or doctor first. If your sore throat is severe, comes with a high temperature, or does not improve within 3 days, see your doctor.
