Epimax Original Cream is a light, lanolin-free emollient for the relief of dry skin in eczema, psoriasis and other dry skin conditions. This Epimax cream blends white soft paraffin 15% and liquid paraffin 6% to soften, hydrate and protect the skin, and it can be used as often as you need – either as a leave-on moisturiser or as a soap substitute in the bath or shower. The 500 g pump tottle makes it easy to apply generously over larger areas.

What is Epimax cream?

Epimax Original Cream is a non-greasy emollient made by Aspire Pharma. It contains white soft paraffin 15% and liquid paraffin 6% in a simple, lanolin-free base, which makes it a useful option if your skin reacts to the lanolin in some other moisturisers. It is a Class I medical device rather than a cosmetic or a licensed medicine, and it works by trapping moisture in the skin and forming a protective barrier. Because it contains no fragrance and no lanolin, many people with sensitive, eczema-prone skin find this Epimax cream gentle enough for everyday use.

What is Epimax cream used for?

Epimax Original Cream is used as an emollient to relieve and manage dry skin. Typical uses include:

  • dry, rough, flaky or tight skin
  • eczema and atopic dermatitis
  • psoriasis and other dry, scaly skin conditions
  • everyday moisturising for sensitive skin
  • a soap substitute for washing in the bath or shower

It is not a steroid and does not treat the inflammation of a flare on its own – it is used regularly alongside any steroid or other treatment your doctor has prescribed to keep the skin hydrated and comfortable. For a richer paraffin blend you might compare E45 Cream, and for an antimicrobial emollient there is Dermol 500 Lotion.

How does it work?

The paraffins in Epimax Original Cream sit on the skin surface and slow the loss of water that normally escapes from the deeper layers. This lets dry skin rehydrate, eases itching and tightness, and helps restore a smoother, more supple feel. Used regularly, an emollient like this can reduce how often dry-skin conditions flare.

How to use Epimax cream

Epimax Original Cream is suitable for adults, the elderly and children. Use it as often as your skin needs:

  • As a leave-on moisturiser: smooth it into the skin in the direction of hair growth. Allow any excess to soak in, and wash your hands after use.
  • As a soap substitute: use it instead of soap or shower gel when washing or in the shower.

Apply generously and as frequently as required – there is no fixed limit. Reapply whenever the skin feels dry.

Is it safe to use near the eyes?

Avoid getting the cream in your eyes. Paraffin-based emollients have been linked to eye-surface irritation when they are applied to the eyelids or repeatedly get into the eyes, so keep this Epimax cream away from the eye area. If any product does accidentally get into your eyes, rinse well with water and seek medical advice. For dry, flaky eyelids specifically, a product designed for the eyelids is more appropriate.

Fire safety warning

Paraffin-based emollients like this one are flammable once they build up on fabric. Do not smoke or go near naked flames while using the cream, as there is a risk of severe burns. Clothing, bedding and dressings that have been in contact with the product catch fire more easily and are a serious fire hazard. Washing fabrics reduces but does not fully remove the build-up, so keep well away from cigarettes, open fires and other flames.

Side effects and precautions

Emollients are very well tolerated and most people have no problems. Rarely, mild reactions such as a skin rash can occur. Epimax Original Cream contains cetostearyl alcohol and phenoxyethanol, which can occasionally cause local skin reactions in people who are sensitive to them, so do not use it if you know you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before use if your skin is broken, badly cracked, infected or bleeding, and stop using it if your skin becomes more irritated. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

How Epimax cream compares to other emollients

Epimax Original Cream is a simple, lanolin-free and fragrance-free paraffin cream, which makes it a popular everyday choice for sensitive skin. E45 Cream uses a similar paraffin blend but also contains lanolin, while CeraVe Moisturising Cream adds ceramides and hyaluronic acid. The best emollient is simply the one you will use often and that feels comfortable on your skin – many people keep more than one for different areas or times of day.

Epimax cream FAQs

What is Epimax cream used for?
Epimax Original Cream is an emollient used to relieve and manage dry skin in conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and other dry, flaky skin. It moisturises, softens and protects the skin, and can be applied as a leave-on cream or used as a soap substitute when washing.
Is Epimax cream a steroid?
No. Epimax cream is not a steroid. It is a simple paraffin-based emollient (white soft paraffin and liquid paraffin) that hydrates and protects dry skin. It contains no hydrocortisone or other steroid, so it is used alongside – not instead of – any steroid cream your doctor prescribes for a flare.
Can you use Epimax cream on your face?
Yes, Epimax Original Cream can be used on the face as a moisturiser for dry skin. Apply a small amount and smooth it in, but keep it away from the eyes. If it gets into your eyes, rinse well with water.
Can Epimax cream be used near or around the eyes?
Avoid applying it to the eyelids or getting it into the eyes. Paraffin emollients have been linked to eye-surface irritation when used around the eyes, so keep Epimax Original Cream away from the eye area. If any gets into your eyes, rinse thoroughly with water and seek medical advice.
Is Epimax cream good for eczema and psoriasis?
Epimax Original Cream is designed as an emollient for dry skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis. Used regularly it keeps the skin hydrated and can reduce how often it flares. It works best as part of a routine alongside any treatment your doctor has recommended.
Does Epimax Original Cream contain lanolin?
No. Epimax Original Cream is lanolin-free and fragrance-free, which makes it a useful choice if your skin reacts to the lanolin found in some other moisturisers. It does contain cetostearyl alcohol and phenoxyethanol, so avoid it if you are sensitive to those.
Can Epimax cream be used as a soap substitute or body wash?
Yes. As well as being a leave-on moisturiser, Epimax Original Cream can be used instead of soap or shower gel when washing or in the shower. Ordinary soaps can dry the skin, so a soap substitute helps keep moisture in.
Can babies and children use Epimax cream?
Epimax Original Cream is suitable for adults, the elderly and children and can be applied as often as needed. For babies and very young children it is sensible to check with your pharmacist or doctor first so they can confirm it is right and show you how much to use.
Is Epimax cream flammable?
Yes. Like other paraffin-based emollients, Epimax cream is flammable once it soaks into fabric. Do not smoke or go near naked flames while using it. Clothing, bedding and dressings that contact the product burn more easily, and washing reduces but does not fully remove the build-up, so keep away from fire and cigarettes.
What is the difference between Epimax Original Cream, Epimax Oatmeal Cream and E45?
All three are emollients for dry skin. Epimax Original Cream is a plain, lanolin-free paraffin cream. Epimax Oatmeal Cream adds colloidal oat and is aimed at itchy skin. E45 Cream uses a similar paraffin blend to Epimax Original but also contains lanolin. Choose whichever suits your skin and any sensitivities you have.
