Fluconazole 150mg Capsule is a convenient single-dose oral treatment for vaginal thrush. The one capsule contains fluconazole 150mg, an antifungal that works from the inside to clear the Candida yeast behind thrush, and it can also treat the associated soreness (candidal balanitis) in a male partner.
What is Fluconazole 150mg Capsule?
Fluconazole is an antifungal medicine. Taken as a single 150mg capsule, it treats thrush by stopping the Candida yeast from growing, tackling the infection throughout the body rather than only at the surface. It is a pharmacy (P) medicine supplied from our GPhC-registered UK pharmacy, and is suitable for adults aged 16–60.
What is fluconazole used for?
- Vaginal thrush (candidal vaginitis) – including thrush that keeps coming back
- Candidal balanitis – thrush-related soreness of the penis, in a male partner
For the external itching and irritation that often comes with thrush, many people also use a soothing Canesten external cream.
How to take Fluconazole 150mg
- Swallow one 150mg capsule whole with water.
- Take it as a single dose – only one capsule is needed for a normal course.
- It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food.
Please read the patient information leaflet inside the pack before use.
How long does fluconazole take to work?
Symptoms often begin to ease within a day or two, with thrush usually clearing over the following few days. If your symptoms have not improved within 7 days, speak to your pharmacist or doctor.
Fluconazole capsule or a pessary?
Both clear thrush well. The capsule is a simple single oral dose; a Canesten thrush pessary treats locally, and a combi pessary with external cream does both. Choose whichever suits you – you can browse the full thrush treatment range to compare.
Side effects of fluconazole
Most people take fluconazole without any problems. When side effects do occur they are usually mild – headache, nausea, tummy discomfort or diarrhoea. Stop taking it and get medical help straight away if you develop a rash, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing, as these may signal an allergic reaction.
Who should not take Fluconazole 150mg?
Do not take this capsule if you are allergic to fluconazole or similar azole antifungals. It is licensed for adults aged 16–60 only. Do not use it in pregnancy or when trying to conceive unless your doctor advises. Tell your pharmacist about any other medicines first – fluconazole interacts with warfarin and some heart-rhythm and other medicines. Speak to your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, or if thrush keeps returning.
