What is Regaine Extra Strength Scalp Solution?

It is a topical liquid containing minoxidil 5% w/v, applied to the scalp with a pump spray or an extended spray-tip applicator. It is the liquid counterpart to the extra-strength foam: the same active ingredient at the same strength, in a formulation that can be targeted precisely onto a specific thinning area.

Solution or foam — and why the age limit differs

This is the detail most comparisons miss. The extra-strength solution is licensed for men aged 18 to 65. The extra-strength foam is licensed for men aged 18 to 49. Both contain minoxidil 5% and both are applied twice daily, so if you are over 49 the solution is the product licensed for you.

Beyond that, the choice is practical: the foam dries faster and leaves less residue; the solution’s applicator makes it easier to reach the scalp through longer hair and to target a defined patch. The solution contains propylene glycol, which is the usual cause of scalp irritation with minoxidil — if the liquid irritates your scalp, the foam is the alternative.

How to use Regaine scalp solution

  • Apply 1 ml twice a day — six pump-spray actuations per dose — to a completely dry scalp.
  • Do not exceed 2 ml in total per day, regardless of how large the affected area is.
  • Part the hair, direct the applicator at the scalp rather than the hair, and spread the liquid with your fingertips over the whole thinning area.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.
  • Let it dry completely before going to bed or using styling products.

Applying more than 2 ml a day does not accelerate regrowth; it increases how much is absorbed and the chance of side effects.

How long does it take to work?

Allow at least eight weeks for the first signs and around four months before making a judgement — which is exactly why the three-month pack exists. A temporary increase in shedding in the first few weeks is expected: minoxidil moves resting follicles into a new growth phase and the old hair is released first.

Regrowth is maintained only while you keep treating. Stop, and new hair is usually lost within three to four months.

Side effects

Most are local: scalp itching, dryness, flaking or irritation, and early temporary shedding. Propylene glycol in the liquid formulation is a more frequent cause of contact irritation than the foam. Stop and seek medical advice if you develop chest pain, palpitations or an irregular heartbeat, dizziness, sudden weight gain, or swelling of the hands or feet. Keep it away from children — accidental swallowing is dangerous.
