What is Regaine for Women Regular Strength?

It is a topical solution containing minoxidil 20 mg/ml (2% w/v), applied to the scalp with a pump spray or extended spray-tip applicator. It is licensed for androgenetic alopecia in women — the gradual, patterned thinning that widens the parting and thins the crown.

It is a general sale medicine, so no prescription or pharmacy consultation is needed.

Regular Strength 2% or Extra Strength 5%?

This is the decision most women are actually making on this page, so here it is plainly:

  • Regular Strength 2% solution (this product) — a liquid, applied twice a day. Lower concentration, so generally better tolerated on a scalp that reacts to stronger preparations.
  • Extra Strength 5% foam — a foam, applied once a day. Higher concentration and a simpler routine, but more likely to cause local irritation.

How does minoxidil work?

In female pattern hair loss, follicles miniaturise over successive cycles: each new hair is finer and shorter than the last. Minoxidil widens the small blood vessels around the follicle and lengthens the growth (anagen) phase, allowing miniaturised follicles to produce thicker hair again. It acts on living follicles, so treating early gives a better result than treating long-established thinning.

How to use Regaine for Women Regular Strength

  • Apply 1 ml twice a day to a completely dry scalp.
  • Part the hair and direct the applicator at the scalp, not the hair, then spread the liquid over the whole thinning area with your fingertips.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.
  • Let it dry fully before using styling products or going to bed.
  • Do not exceed 2 ml per day.

How long before it works?

Use it consistently for 12 to 24 weeks before judging it. An increase in shedding during the first two to six weeks is expected and is a sign the follicles are cycling into a new growth phase. If nothing has improved after 24 weeks, stop and speak to your pharmacist or GP. Regrowth is maintained only while treatment continues — stopping usually means losing the new hair within three to four months.

Who should not use it

  • Men — use the men’s extra strength products instead
  • Anyone under 18 or over 65
  • Anyone with high blood pressure, treated or untreated
  • Anyone with psoriasis, sunburn, or broken or shaved skin on the scalp

Unwanted hair growth on the face is an uncommon side effect of topical minoxidil, usually from the solution running onto the face or from transfer on the hands. Apply it carefully to the scalp only, and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. If it happens, stop and speak to your pharmacist.
What happens if I stop using it?
Any regrowth is maintained only while you keep treating. After stopping, new hair is usually lost over three to four months and the hair returns to the pattern it would otherwise have had.
Can I use it on a bald patch or sudden hair loss?
No. It is licensed for female pattern hair loss – gradual thinning with a widening parting. Patchy bald spots, sudden shedding, or hair loss after illness, a new medicine or extreme dieting need a diagnosis from your GP first.
