Voltarol Back & Muscle Pain Relief 1.16% Gel relieves back and muscular pain with targeted, anti-inflammatory action. It contains diclofenac diethylammonium 1.16% w/w and comes with a no-mess applicator so you can treat the painful area without getting gel on your hands.

What is Voltarol Back & Muscle Pain Relief Gel?

This is a topical anti-inflammatory gel containing diclofenac diethylammonium 1.16%. Rubbed into the skin over a sore muscle or area of back pain, it works locally to ease pain and inflammation, with only a small amount absorbed compared with tablets. It is a pharmacy (P) medicine from a GPhC-registered UK pharmacy.

What is it used for?

  • Back pain and muscular pain (neck, shoulders, back)
  • Sprains, strains and sports injuries
  • Soft-tissue rheumatic pain

For ongoing joint pain or arthritis, the 12-hour Voltarol Joint Pain Relief 2.32% Gel (applied twice daily) may suit you better.

How does it work?

Diclofenac reduces the production of prostaglandins – the substances that cause pain and inflammation – in the tissue beneath the skin where the gel is applied.

How to use Voltarol Back & Muscle gel

  • Apply 2–4 g (a 2–2.5 cm blob) to the painful area using the no-mess applicator and rub in gently.
  • Use 3 to 4 times a day, leaving at least 4 hours between applications (no more than 4 times in 24 hours).
  • For adults and children aged 14 and over.
  • Do not use for more than 7 days unless your doctor advises.

Please confirm the dose and frequency against the patient information leaflet inside your pack before use.

How long does it take to work?

Some relief is often felt within the first hour, building over a few days of regular use. If pain has not improved after 7 days, or gets worse, speak to your pharmacist or doctor.

Side effects

The most common effect is a local skin reaction – redness, itching or a rash where the gel is applied. Whole-body side effects are uncommon because little diclofenac is absorbed. Stop use and seek medical help for a severe rash, swelling or difficulty breathing.

Who should not use it

Do not use this gel if you are allergic to diclofenac, aspirin or other NSAID painkillers, or if these have triggered asthma, wheezing or hives. Do not use it in the last 3 months of pregnancy, and only on advice earlier in pregnancy or when breastfeeding. Avoid broken or infected skin, the eyes and mouth.
