About Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide)

Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist made by Novo Nordisk. Until now, semaglutide for weight management was only available in the UK as the weekly Wegovy pen injection. The new tablet delivers the same medicine by mouth, taken once a day — a practical option if you dislike needles, travel often, or simply prefer a tablet.

What is the Wegovy pill used for?

The Wegovy pill is licensed for weight management in adults, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Semaglutide mimics the natural GLP-1 hormone, which reduces appetite and helps you feel fuller for longer, so you eat less. In the OASIS clinical trial programme, the 25 mg daily tablet produced average weight loss of around 16.6% over 64 weeks; individual results vary.

Who can take the Wegovy pill?

Adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol or sleep apnoea. It is not suitable in pregnancy or breastfeeding, with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, or alongside another GLP-1 medicine. Suitability is always decided by our prescriber.

How to take Wegovy tablets

Take one tablet whole on an empty stomach after at least an 8-hour fast, with no more than a small sip of water. Wait at least 30 minutes before any food, drink or other medicines. Do not split, crush or chew the tablet. Treatment starts at a low dose and is increased step by step to reduce side effects.

Wegovy pill side effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation — usually mild, most noticeable when starting or increasing the dose, and easing over time. Less common but serious effects include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems and allergic reactions. Tell your prescriber about any side effects, and see the patient information leaflet for the full list.

How to store Wegovy tablets

Unlike the injection, Wegovy tablets need no refrigeration. Store below 30°C in the original blister pack to protect from moisture, and keep out of sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Wegovy pill?
The Wegovy pill is an oral form of semaglutide, a GLP-1 medicine licensed in the UK for weight management. It contains the same active ingredient as the weekly Wegovy injection, taken as one tablet a day instead of an injection.
How does the Wegovy pill work?
Semaglutide mimics the natural GLP-1 hormone, which reduces appetite and helps you feel full sooner and for longer, so you eat less. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Is the Wegovy pill as effective as the injection?
In the OASIS clinical trial programme, the 25 mg daily tablet produced average weight loss of around 16.6% over 64 weeks, comparable to results seen with the 2.4 mg weekly injection. Individual results vary.
How long does Wegovy take to work?
Appetite effects usually begin within the first few weeks. Weight loss builds steadily over several months as your dose is increased step by step to the maintenance level.
Is Wegovy safe?
Wegovy is MHRA-licensed and is only supplied after a clinical suitability check by a UK-registered prescriber. Like all medicines it can cause side effects, most commonly digestive symptoms that settle with time.
How much does the Wegovy pill cost in the UK?
At Bury Healthcare Online the Wegovy pill costs from £119 per month for the starter doses to £199 per month for the 25 mg maintenance dose.
Can I get the Wegovy pill on the NHS?
NHS access to weight-loss medicines is limited and usually runs through specialist weight-management services with strict criteria and waiting lists. Regulated private pharmacies like ours offer an alternative route after a clinical consultation.
Can I switch from the Wegovy injection to the tablet?
Usually, yes. Patients established on the 2.4 mg weekly injection can typically move directly to the 25 mg daily tablet. Our prescriber will confirm the right transition plan during your consultation.
Who should not take Wegovy?
Wegovy is not suitable in pregnancy or breastfeeding, with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, or alongside another GLP-1 medicine. Some other conditions, such as previous pancreatitis, need extra review by the prescriber.
Do Wegovy side effects go away?
Nausea and other digestive side effects are most common when starting treatment or increasing the dose, and usually ease within a few weeks. Contact us or your GP if side effects persist or are severe.
Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic?
Both contain semaglutide, but Wegovy is licensed for weight management while Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes. Ozempic is not licensed for weight loss in the UK.
How do I take the Wegovy tablet?
Take one tablet whole on an empty stomach after at least an 8-hour fast, with no more than a small sip of water. Wait at least 30 minutes before any food, drink or other medicines, and do not split, crush or chew the tablet.
