What is TRT and How Can It Help?

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is a medically supervised treatment for men whose blood tests confirm low testosterone (clinically known as hypogonadism). It tops your testosterone up to a healthy physiological range using gels or injections, and may help with symptoms of low testosterone such as fatigue, low libido, low mood, brain fog and reduced muscle mass.

At Bury Healthcare Online, every TRT plan is prescribed by a pharmacist independent prescriber after a full hormone assessment, and is monitored with regular blood tests to keep it safe and effective. We follow BSSM guidance and offer testosterone gels, injections, and HCG where fertility preservation matters.

Our private TRT clinic offers faster access than the NHS, specialist men’s-health expertise, and all-inclusive pricing with no hidden costs. We serve patients across Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and the wider UK with online consultations and home delivery.

Signs of Low Testosterone in Men

Low testosterone is common and often goes undiagnosed. If several of these symptoms of low testosterone sound familiar, a simple assessment can tell you whether low testosterone treatment in the UK is right for you.

The symptoms of low testosterone can build up gradually and are easy to put down to stress, age or a busy lifestyle. They can affect your energy, mood, sex drive, body composition and sleep. None of these symptoms on their own confirms low testosterone — diagnosis is always based on blood tests interpreted by a prescriber alongside your symptoms — but together they are a good reason to get checked.

How Our Private TRT Clinic Works

Getting started with TRT online is straightforward. Our pharmacist-led service guides you through every step.

1

Complete Online Assessment

Fill out our confidential health questionnaire about your symptoms, medical history and goals. It takes about 10 minutes and is reviewed by our prescriber.

2

Blood Tests Included

Your £149 initial assessment includes a full hormone panel, PSA and key blood markers — via a home test kit or at our Bury pharmacy. No separate test to buy.

3

Consultation & Treatment

Meet your prescriber by video to review your results and agree a personalised plan. If TRT is appropriate, your medication and supplies are delivered to your door.

🩸 Why Two Blood Tests?

UK guidelines require two confirmed low morning testosterone readings before starting TRT. Your initial blood test checks your level, and a confirmatory test reviews your full hormone profile, PSA and blood markers to make sure TRT is safe and appropriate for you. Both are included in your £149 initial assessment.

TRT Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about testosterone replacement therapy, costs, NHS access, and our private TRT clinic.

What is TRT?

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is a medically supervised treatment for men with low testosterone (hypogonadism) confirmed by blood tests. It tops testosterone up to a healthy physiological range using gels or injections, and may help with symptoms of low testosterone such as fatigue, low libido, low mood and reduced muscle mass. At Bury Healthcare Online, TRT is prescribed by a pharmacist independent prescriber after a full hormone assessment and monitored with regular blood tests to keep it safe and effective.

Can I get TRT on the NHS?

The NHS will usually only consider testosterone replacement when total testosterone is persistently below around 8 nmol/L, and access can involve long waits and a referral to an endocrinologist. Many men with symptoms and a level between 8 and 12 nmol/L fall through that gap. Private TRT fills it: we follow BSSM guidance, which supports treatment from 12 nmol/L when symptoms are present. With your consent we can also write to your GP to keep your records up to date.

How much does TRT cost in the UK?

Private TRT in the UK typically costs around £80–£150 per month. At Bury Healthcare Online the one-off initial assessment is £149, which includes your blood tests and a video consultation. Ongoing treatment is £89/month for testosterone only or £119/month with HCG, and both are all-inclusive: medication, injection supplies, monitoring bloods and clinical reviews. A transfer consultation for men already on TRT is £49. There are no hidden charges for postage, supplies or reviews.

What testosterone level qualifies for TRT?

We follow BSSM guidelines, which support TRT for men with total testosterone below 12 nmol/L who have symptoms, or below 8 nmol/L regardless of symptoms. We also consider free testosterone and SHBG levels. The NHS typically only treats below 8 nmol/L, which leaves many symptomatic men without help between 8 and 12 nmol/L. Two confirmed morning blood tests are needed before starting, and your prescriber interprets the full picture rather than a single number.

Is TRT safe?

When properly prescribed and monitored, TRT has a well-established safety profile. The TRAVERSE study (2023) found no increase in cardiovascular risk in men treated appropriately. The main markers we monitor are your haematocrit (red blood cell concentration), PSA (a prostate marker) and blood pressure, which is why regular monitoring bloods are part of every plan. Your prescriber assesses your individual risk factors before starting and reviews them at each follow-up to keep treatment safe.

Is TRT a steroid?

Testosterone is a naturally occurring hormone, and the testosterone used in TRT is the same molecule your body produces. It is technically an anabolic steroid, but TRT is very different from the high-dose anabolic steroid misuse associated with bodybuilding. TRT aims only to return testosterone to a normal, healthy physiological range under medical supervision, not to push it above normal. Prescribed and monitored correctly, it is a legitimate, legal medical treatment for diagnosed low testosterone.

Does TRT cause hair loss?

TRT can accelerate male-pattern hair loss in men who are already genetically predisposed to it, because some testosterone converts to DHT, the hormone linked to hereditary baldness. It does not cause baldness in men without that genetic tendency. If hair loss is a concern, raise it during your consultation and your prescriber can discuss the options and keep an eye on it. Many men on TRT notice no change to their hair at all.

Will TRT affect my fertility?

Testosterone can reduce sperm production, so TRT can affect fertility while you are taking it. For men who want to preserve fertility, we offer HCG alongside testosterone (our £119/month option), which helps maintain natural testicular function and sperm production. If you are actively trying to conceive, tell your prescriber before starting treatment and we will discuss timing and alternatives with you.

How long does TRT take to work?

Most men notice improvements in energy and mood within 2–4 weeks of starting TRT. Libido often improves within 3–6 weeks. Changes to muscle mass, body composition and strength usually take 3–6 months of consistent treatment. Everyone responds differently, which is why we monitor your levels and symptoms and adjust your protocol at your reviews to get the best result for you.

How often do I take HCG on TRT?

HCG is typically self-injected two to three times a week alongside testosterone, although the exact schedule depends on your protocol and goals. It is used to help maintain natural testicular function, fertility and testosterone production while on TRT. Your prescriber will set your dose and frequency and provide full training and supplies, then review how you are getting on at your follow-up consultations and adjust if needed.

Can I inject testosterone myself?

Yes — most of our patients self-inject at home. We provide full training via video, written guides and ongoing support. Subcutaneous injections (into the fat layer) are simple, virtually painless and can be done with tiny insulin-style needles. Many men prefer this to the less frequent but larger intramuscular injections. If you would rather use a gel such as Testogel or Tostran, that option is available too.

Can I transfer from another TRT provider?

Yes. We offer a discounted transfer consultation (£49) for men already on TRT. Just bring your recent blood results and current protocol. We’ll review everything, set you up on our system and aim for a smooth transition with no gap in treatment. Many men transfer to us for our all-inclusive pricing and responsive clinical support across Greater Manchester and the UK.
