A skin booster treatment in action.

Skin boosters are one of the most talked-about treatments in aesthetics right now — and one of the most misunderstood. Here is a clear, honest explanation from a GPhC-registered prescriber, with no hype and no jargon.

What are skin boosters?

Skin boosters are a series of tiny micro-injections of stabilised hyaluronic acid (HA) — a sugar molecule your skin makes naturally — placed just beneath the surface to improve hydration, elasticity and overall skin quality. Unlike a face cream that sits on top of the skin, a booster delivers that hydration into the skin, where it can hold onto water and support the skin’s own repair processes.

In UK clinics you may hear brand names such as Profhilo and Seventy Hyal. These are injectable skin-conditioning products; they are not the same as anti-wrinkle injections and they are not dermal fillers. You can read more on our skin boosters treatment page.

How are skin boosters different from dermal fillers?

This is the question we are asked most. The simplest way to think about it: fillers add structure; boosters improve quality.

  • Dermal fillers are placed to add volume or definition to a specific area — cheeks, lips, jawline or chin — and change the shape or contour.
  • Skin boosters are spread more evenly to hydrate and condition the skin across a wider area. They are not designed to change your shape; they aim to improve how your skin looks and feels — smoother, firmer and more radiant.

Many people have neither, one, or both, depending on their goals. A consultation is the only way to know which — if any — is right for you.

What do skin boosters actually do?

Over a course of treatments, skin boosters are used to support:

  • Hydration — deep, lasting moisture rather than a surface-level fix.
  • Skin firmness and elasticity — helping skin feel more supple and bouncy.
  • Fine lines and texture — softening the look of crepey or tired skin.
  • Glow and tone — that healthy, well-rested look people often describe.

Results build gradually and individual results vary — this is a skin-quality treatment, not an instant transformation. To understand the timeline, see how long skin boosters take to work and last.

Which areas can be treated?

Skin boosters are most often used on the face, but they are also popular for the neck, décolletage (chest) and the backs of the hands — areas that show ageing and dehydration but are often forgotten. The right areas for you are agreed during your consultation.

How do skin boosters work under the skin?

Hyaluronic acid is remarkable at attracting and holding water — a single gram can bind a large amount of moisture. When placed into the skin, it helps rehydrate from within and supports the skin’s natural environment for collagen and elastin. Because this works with your skin’s own biology, boosters are usually given as a short initial course a few weeks apart, followed by occasional maintenance.

Is it right for you? Consultation always comes first

At Bury Healthcare Online, every injectable treatment starts with a prescriber-led consultation. We assess your skin, discuss your goals, explain what is realistic and check that the treatment is suitable and safe for you. Skin boosters are not appropriate for everyone — for example, they are generally avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding and where certain skin or health conditions are present. Honest advice matters more to us than booking a treatment, and we will tell you if we do not think a booster is the right choice.

Skin boosters: your questions answered

Are skin boosters the same as fillers?
No. Fillers add volume and change shape in a specific area; skin boosters spread hydration to improve overall skin quality without changing your contours. They are different products used for different goals.
Do skin boosters actually work?
Skin boosters are designed to improve skin hydration and quality over a course of treatments, and many people see a visible improvement in how their skin looks and feels. They are not a miracle cure and will not change your face shape, results build gradually, and individual results vary. A consultation helps set realistic expectations.
Do skin boosters hurt?
A very fine needle is used and most people describe only brief, minor discomfort. A numbing option can be discussed at your consultation. Any tenderness usually settles quickly.
How many sessions will I need?
Skin boosters are typically given as a short initial course of sessions a few weeks apart, then topped up periodically. The exact plan depends on the product and your skin, and is agreed with your prescriber.
When will I see results?
Results are gradual rather than instant, building over the weeks following your sessions as the skin rehydrates and responds. Individual results vary.
Are skin boosters safe?
Hyaluronic acid is well tolerated and widely used, but no injectable treatment is risk-free. Common effects are temporary and mild, such as small bumps, redness or bruising at the injection points. A prescriber-led assessment helps keep treatment as safe as possible.
Can anyone have skin boosters?
Not everyone is suitable. Your prescriber will review your medical history and skin at consultation. Boosters are generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding and in certain medical situations.
How much do skin boosters cost?
Cost depends on the product used, the number of areas and how many sessions your plan involves, so we give a clear, personalised quote at your consultation rather than a one-size-fits-all price.
Who will carry out my treatment?
Your treatment is led by a GPhC-registered pharmacist prescriber (GPhC reg. 1126145) at Bury Healthcare Online, so clinical judgement and safety are built into every step.
