Abidec Multivitamin Drops give babies and children seven essential vitamins — including the vitamin D the NHS recommends for every young child — in one easy daily dose. Suitable from birth to 12 years, with a natural flavour, the 25 ml bottle comes with a dropper syringe for simple, accurate dosing.

What is in Abidec?

Each 0.6 ml dose contains seven vitamins that support healthy growth, bones, teeth, eyesight and immune function:

  • Vitamin A (retinol palmitate) 1333 IU — normal vision and immune function
  • Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) 400 IU (10 µg) — strong bones and teeth
  • Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) 40 mg — immune support and iron absorption
  • Vitamin B1 (thiamine) 0.4 mg, B2 (riboflavin) 0.8 mg and B6 (pyridoxine) 0.8 mg — energy release and development
  • Nicotinamide (vitamin B3) 8 mg — healthy skin and nervous system

Why give young children a vitamin supplement?

UK health guidance recommends that all children aged 6 months to 5 years take a daily supplement containing vitamins A, C and D, and that breastfed babies get a daily vitamin D supplement from birth. Young children’s diets and limited sun exposure often do not provide enough vitamin D on their own. Abidec’s 10 µg of vitamin D per full dose matches the recommended daily amount for this age group.

How to give Abidec drops

  • Babies under 1 year: 0.3 ml once a day (the lower mark on the syringe).
  • Children 1 to 12 years: 0.6 ml once a day.
  • Drop the dose onto the back of the tongue using the syringe provided — or mix it into a small amount of milk or food if your child prefers.
  • Do not exceed the stated dose.

Peanut (arachis oil) allergy warning

Abidec contains refined peanut (arachis) oil. Do not give it to your child if they are — or you suspect they may be — allergic to peanuts or soya. If your child has a peanut or soya allergy, ask your pharmacist about a peanut-free multivitamin alternative instead.

Cautions

  • Do not give Abidec alongside other supplements containing vitamins A or D (including cod liver oil) — too much of these vitamins can be harmful.
  • For premature babies or children with medical conditions, ask your doctor or health visitor before starting a supplement.
  • Contains sucrose (sugar) — relevant for children with rare sugar intolerances; consider tooth-brushing routines.

Abidec FAQs

Is Abidec suitable for newborn babies?
Yes — Abidec is suitable from birth to 12 years. Babies under 1 year take 0.3 ml daily. For premature babies, check with your doctor, midwife or health visitor first.
Does Abidec contain peanut?
Yes. Abidec contains refined peanut (arachis) oil. Do not give it to a child with a known or suspected peanut or soya allergy — ask your pharmacist for a peanut-free multivitamin instead.
Does Abidec contain vitamin D?
Yes — a full 0.6 ml dose provides 400 IU (10 µg) of vitamin D, which matches the UK recommended daily amount for babies and young children. The 0.3 ml infant dose provides half that, in line with infant guidance.
How do I get my baby to take Abidec?
Use the syringe to place the drops on the back of the tongue. If your child dislikes the taste, the dose can be mixed into a small amount of milk, juice or soft food and given straight away.
Can I give Abidec with other vitamins or cod liver oil?
No. Abidec already contains vitamins A and D, and giving another product with these vitamins (such as cod liver oil) risks exceeding safe amounts. Use one age-appropriate supplement at a time.
What happens if I miss a dose or give too much?
A missed dose is nothing to worry about — just continue as normal the next day; do not give a double dose. If you give much more than the recommended amount, or do so repeatedly, contact your pharmacist or doctor for advice.
Why does the NHS recommend vitamins for children under 5?
Growing children need vitamin D for bones and teeth, and diet plus UK sunlight often does not provide enough. UK guidance recommends vitamins A, C and D daily from 6 months to 5 years, and vitamin D from birth for breastfed babies.
