Regaine for Men Extra Strength Scalp Foam contains minoxidil 5% w/w and is licensed to treat male pattern baldness. Applied twice a day to a dry scalp, it works on follicles that are thinning but still active, helping to slow further loss and regrow hair at the crown.
What is Regaine for Men Extra Strength Foam?
It is a topical foam containing minoxidil 5% w/w — the highest strength licensed for over-the-counter use — for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) in men aged 18 to 49. The foam formulation dries quickly and leaves less residue than the liquid solution, which is why many men prefer it for daily use.
It is a general sale medicine, so no prescription is needed. Our pharmacist can advise if you are unsure whether it suits your pattern of hair loss.
What is Regaine for Men used for?
It is licensed for male pattern baldness, which typically appears as:
- Thinning at the crown or vertex, spreading outwards
- A gradually receding hairline at the temples
- Hair that grows finer and shorter with each cycle
It is not for sudden or patchy hair loss, hair loss with no family history, or hair loss following illness, stress or a new medicine, and it is not for a scalp that is sore, scaly or inflamed. Those need a diagnosis from your GP first.
How does minoxidil work on male pattern baldness?
Male pattern baldness is driven by follicle miniaturisation: under the influence of DHT, affected follicles shorten their growth phase and produce progressively finer hairs. Minoxidil widens the small blood vessels supplying the follicle and extends the growth (anagen) phase, so miniaturised follicles can produce thicker, longer hairs again. It does not block DHT — it acts on the follicle itself — and it only works on follicles that are still alive, which is why early treatment gives the best result.
How to use Regaine for Men foam
- Apply 1 g of foam — about half a capful — twice a day, morning and evening.
- The total daily dose must not exceed 2 g.
- Apply to a completely dry scalp: part the hair, dispense the foam onto your fingers, spread over the thinning area and massage in gently.
- Wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.
- Allow it to dry fully before using styling products or going to bed.
Applying more than 2 g a day does not speed up regrowth; it increases the amount absorbed and the risk of side effects.
How long does Regaine for Men take to work?
Give it at least eight weeks before looking for change, and around four months before judging it properly. Some men notice a temporary increase in shedding in the first few weeks — this is expected, and reflects follicles being pushed into a new growth cycle. If there has been no improvement after four months of consistent twice-daily use, speak to your pharmacist or GP.
The effect lasts only while you keep using it. Stopping means new growth is usually lost within three to four months. Plan for it as an ongoing routine.
Who should not use Regaine for Men
- Women — there is a separate Regaine for Women once-daily foam, and the men’s product is contraindicated in women
- Men under 18 or over 49
- Anyone with high blood pressure, treated or untreated
- Anyone with psoriasis, sunburn, or broken or shaved skin on the scalp
- Anyone allergic to minoxidil or the foam’s other ingredients
Side effects
Most side effects are local: scalp itching, dryness, flaking or irritation, and temporary shedding early on. Stop and seek medical advice if you develop chest pain, palpitations or an irregular heartbeat, dizziness, sudden unexplained weight gain, or swelling of the hands or feet. Each 1 g dose contains around 536 mg of ethanol. Accidental swallowing is dangerous — keep it well away from children.
Foam or solution — which Regaine should you choose?
Both contain minoxidil 5% and both are applied twice daily. The foam dries fast and leaves the hair feeling cleaner, so it suits men who apply it in the morning. The Regaine for Men Extra Strength scalp solution uses a dropper or spray applicator that some men find easier to target on a specific thinning patch, and it works out cheaper per month in the three-month pack. If you know you will be using it long term, the three-month foam pack is the better value. Browse the full hair loss treatment range.
