Voltarol Joint Pain Relief 2.32% Gel delivers targeted relief from joint pain and inflammation. It contains diclofenac diethylammonium 2.32% w/w, an anti-inflammatory (NSAID) you apply directly to the painful area for up to 12 hours of relief.

What is Voltarol Joint Pain Relief Gel?

Voltarol 2.32% Gel is a topical anti-inflammatory gel containing diclofenac diethylammonium. Applied over a painful joint or muscle, it works locally to reduce pain and inflammation, with only a small amount absorbed into the rest of the body compared with tablets. This 2.32% strength is the 12-hour gel. It is a pharmacy (P) medicine supplied from a GPhC-registered UK pharmacy.

What is Voltarol gel used for?

  • Joint pain, including pain associated with arthritis
  • Sprains, strains and bruises
  • Sports injuries and soft-tissue rheumatic pain (e.g. knees, ankles, wrists)

For back and muscle pain specifically, the 3–4-times-daily Voltarol Back & Muscle Pain Relief 1.16% Gel may suit you better.

How does Voltarol gel work?

Diclofenac reduces the production of prostaglandins – the substances that drive pain and inflammation – in the tissue beneath the skin where it is applied, easing pain and swelling at the source.

How to use Voltarol 2.32% gel

  • Apply 2–4 g (about a 1–2 p coin size) to the painful area and rub in gently.
  • Use twice a day, morning and evening – this is the 12-hour gel, so it is not applied more often.
  • For adults and children aged 14 and over.
  • Wash your hands after applying (unless treating the hands), and let it dry before covering with clothing.

Please confirm the dose and frequency against the patient information leaflet inside your pack before use.

How long does Voltarol gel take to work?

Some relief may be felt within the first hour, with the full anti-inflammatory effect building over a few days of regular use. If pain has not improved within 7 days, or worsens, speak to your pharmacist or doctor.

Side effects of Voltarol gel

The most common effect is a local skin reaction – redness, itching or a rash where the gel is applied. Because only a little diclofenac is absorbed, whole-body side effects are uncommon. Stop use and seek medical help if you develop a severe rash, swelling or difficulty breathing.

Who should not use Voltarol gel

Do not use Voltarol gel if you are allergic to diclofenac, aspirin or other NSAID painkillers, or if these have triggered asthma, wheezing or hives. Do not use it in the last 3 months of pregnancy, and only on advice earlier in pregnancy or when breastfeeding. Do not apply to broken or infected skin, and avoid the eyes and mouth.

Apply 2–4 g of gel (about the size of a 1–2 p coin) to the painful area and rub in gently. Wash your hands afterwards unless they are the area being treated. Where can you apply Voltarol gel?
Apply it to the painful joint or muscle – for example knees, ankles, wrists, elbows, hands or the back. Avoid the eyes, lips and other mucous membranes, and do not apply it to broken skin. Do not cover the area with an airtight dressing.
